Colder weather, career efforts, and a Deliveroo strike

It’s colder today, but clear, with daytime temperatures only a few degrees above freezing. Met Éireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, has issued a “yellow weather warning” for hail, sleet and snow over the weekend. We’ll see if Dublin actually gets any snow, and if it does, I’m sure it won’t be enough to stick.

The chilly weather is good motivation to stay in and focus on my career development efforts. This afternoon I have a networking call with the director of finance at The Wheel, a nonprofit association in Ireland (very similar to CompassPoint in the SF Bay Area). It turns out that he actually lives in Co. Monaghan, from where my family originated, so we chat for a bit about that first. Then I give him a brief overview of my background and explain I’m looking for jobs in the nonprofit / higher education sector here. He gives me some insights and some names of other organizations/recruiters that might be good resources for me. He also confirms that having an accountancy certification is a commonplace requirement for senior finance roles. We’ve connected on LinkedIn, and he said he’ll keep me in mind if he hears of any opportunities for me.

The LGBT center here in Dublin (unfortunately named the “Outhouse”) has posted a finance and administration officer position, and the deadline to apply is today. It’s only a half-time job, the pay isn’t great, and I’m undoubtedly overqualified, but I figure it can’t hurt to apply. In lieu of a CV/resume, they require applicants to fill out an application form in a downloadable Word document file. I find it particularly annoying when organizations do this… everyone else in the world accepts CVs/resumes, so why can’t they? At any rate, I copy and paste all the relevant content from my CV into the application form and submit it via email along with a cover letter.

This evening, Deliveroo bike riders in Dublin have gone on strike over working conditions. The riders are ubiquitous around the city, at least in the city centre — I’m borrowing a photo from an Irish Times article that shows the cooler cube-shaped backpacks they wear. The company is based in the UK and operates across 12 countries, mostly in Europe (the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Spain), but also a few other random places (Australia, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, and Singapore). Thankfully I’m stocked up on plenty of food, and besides it sounds like it’s only a brief strike lasting a few hours this evening. I imagine the workers won’t want to forego too much of their earnings.

Later on, as I’m about to sit down for dinner, I receive an email about a job application I submitted last week for a CFO position at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP / https://www.occrp.org). Their operations are currently based in Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina, although apparently they are looking to establish a European headquarters somewhere else and many of their staff work remotely. They want to invite me for a phone interview sometime next week!  Honestly, I thought it was a long shot when I applied, and I don’t have high expectations, but at least it’s nice to get a response from someone.

Until next time….
