Last night I stayed up later than I probably should have to watch “My Octopus Teacher” on Netflix. It had been recommended by my friend T back in SF, and it was well worth it. Very profound stuff!
As a result, I was extra lazy this morning. The first half of the day has been largely unproductive. I whittled away a good amount of time shopping for Christmas decorations online on Amazon.co.uk. A lot of people in Dublin (and Ireland) seem to be putting their trees and lights up now, so much so that there are articles in the Irish Times and discussions on RTÉ radio about it. I’m aiming to have mine up this next weekend, after Thanksgiving.
Speaking of Thanksgiving, I have been on the hunt for ingredients for my pecan pie recipe. I already acquired a pie plate from Amazon (the apartment was only outfitted with basic cookware). Pecans weren’t a problem. For the pie crust I need both butter and shortening, but I couldn’t find the latter when shopping online at SuperValu. Today at Dunnes I find something labeled “cooking fat” in the refrigerated section next to the butter that must be the same as shortening. The only other ingredient that has been tricky to find is brown rice syrup (which in my recipe is used as an alternative to corn syrup). I tried stopping by a health food store this evening, but they had already closed at 7:00pm, so I’ll have to try back tomorrow or Wednesday.
My other project for the day was to put up some makeshift vanity lights in the bathroom since it’s rather dim in there. The bathroom has no electrical outlets, so I bought some “push” lights powered by 4 AA batteries at a hardware store a few weeks ago, although I wasn’t quite sure how to hang them on the wall. Today I picked up some 3M adhesive hooks that fit the screw holes in the back of the lights. I’m a little worried the tile on the bathroom wall might be too porous. Hopefully they will hold! The lights are made of plastic, so if they do fall they probably won’t break.
