Eurovision semifinals; job offers!

Now that I’m actually living in Europe, I feel obliged to watch the Eurovision semifinals that are being broadcast tonight. For those of you who don’t know, the Eurovision Song Contest is an international song competition organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union which features participants representing primarily European countries. Each participating country submits an original song to be performed on live television and radio, with competing countries then casting votes for the other countries’ songs to determine a winner. Eurovision has been held annually (apart from 2020 due to COVID) since 1956.

It’s complete pop ridiculousness… I can’t take my eyes off it. Ireland has an act that made it to the semifinals, although it wasn’t as impressive as others. A small sample from the Croatian entry, the artist Albina performing Tick-Tock” along with some beefy back-up dancers:

In other news… I’ve received two job offers over the past two days! Yesterday I received a call from The Outhouse for the 1/2 time Finance and Administration Officer position, although it pays crap (I couldn’t resist the pun). And this morning, I receive a call from Jigsaw offering me the Finance Administrator position after having a 2nd interview yesterday. While I’m clearly
overqualified for it, it pays better than Outhouse and includes benefits… I’m still waiting to receive all the details in writing. At this point, I think Jigsaw would definitely be a better choice than The Outhouse, since it’s bigger and there might be more opportunities down the road. I also have an interview on Friday for another position at the University College Dublin’s National Virology Lab, which would pay better than Jigsaw. I’ve been taking a closer look at my budget and financial situation… it’s nice to have at least a couple of offers come in at the same time, and of course there’s no guarantee that any better offers will come along soon. I’ll have some tough decisions to make!

Meanwhile, all non-essential retail shops in Ireland re-opened yesterday. The Health Service Executive and Department of Health are still working to restore their computer networks after the ransomware attack last week. Thankfully, the COVID vaccine registration system is still up and running, and they are opening up to 45-49 year olds this week, working their way down by one year each day. So I should be able to register by Friday! I’ll still have to wait a couple of weeks before the actual vaccine appointment. One twist: they will be offering the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to under 50s on an “at your own risk” basis due to the blood clot scare (even though it’s a very low risk). If you are offered an AstraZeneca or J&J job and turn it down, you’ll have to wait longer for the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

Until next time….
