Visit to UCD campus

I’ve wrapped up the first week of my new job with University College Dublin (UCD). It’s been a lot of onboarding tasks, system access requests, and some initial training on research grant financial reporting. Today I paid a visit to campus so that I could pick up a laptop, external monitor, keyboard and mouse. There were very few people around due to COVID-19 restrictions and the relatively quiet summer term. As far as I know, students are expected to return to campus in mid-September with some precautions such as social distancing and most likely masking indoors.

UCD relocated to a new campus in the Dublin suburb of Belfield in the 1960s, as apparent from the architecture of many buildings during that period. A few photos from my visit…

The Tierney Building, home of many administrative staff offices including the Research Finance Office which is part of the Bursar’s Office
View of the Main Lake with Tierney Hall on the left, the blocky Newman Building in the middle, and the James Joyce Library to the right
Entrance to the James Joyce Library; James Joyce graduated from UCD in 1902 when the campus was still located in city centre near St. Stephens Green
O’Reilly Hall, a conference and events facility, on the north side of the Main Lake
An oversized chess set next to the Main Lake
The “Black Tulip” sculpture by Eamonn Ceannt, a graduate and former Vice President of UCD

The Ardmore House, built circa 1800, is a typical example of a 19th century country villa and now used for conferences and events
The UCD water tower built over 7 days in 1979 and the winner of the inaugural Irish Concrete awards (who knew that was a thing?!)

I had used a GoCar (pay-by-the-hour shared car) to drive to campus and was hoping to swing by IKEA afterwards to look at some options for a small work desk. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and had to return the car to its usual parking location, not far from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. At any rate, it would have been a pain dealing with parking back in Temple Bar, now that it’s bustling again. I decided instead to order a simple desk/table from IKEA online and have it delivered sometime next week, which will be easier and cheaper than using GoCar again. I’m hoping the desk setup will fit in the 2nd bedroom without cluttering it up too much… I’ll need to move the bed over a bit, but it should fit (fingers crossed). Given that I expect to be working from home for several more weeks, I think it will be a good investment, especially since I need a setup that will accommodate a large monitor for spreadsheet work. A laptop screen won’t cut it.

Until next time….
