Uneventful weekend, after-work walk to Portobello

The rest of the weekend was uneventful, even downright boring. I’m not complaining, though. The big event in Ireland was the Saturday night Gaelic football semi-final match. Dublin lost to County Mayo, which apparently is a big deal. The other semi-final match has been delayed due to COVID-19 issues. Maybe I’ll watch the final?

Today I started my third week in the new job at UCD. The onboarding is still slow going, although the work is picking up. In addition to getting up to speed myself, we have two temporary staff members who need to be trained as well. In the meantime, I’m just trying to keep them busy as best I can.

After work, I set out for a walk down to the Portobello area along the street with many names: South Great George’s, Aungier, Redmond’s Hill, Wexford, Camden, Richmond. The neighborhood is a mix of vintage pubs, new hipster places and old derelict buildings. I turned back home at the Grand Canal, which was just enough to get me over 5,000 steps round trip. The skies have been grey today, with some sprinkles of rain, but not too bad. Being a Monday night, it was relatively quiet although there were still some people out at the many pubs and restaurants.

Views of Portobello

The Swan Bar, an authentic Victorian pub descended from a Medieval Inn… there has been a continuous licence on or close to this site since 1661 when Sir Francis Aungier developed what was then Dublin’s widest street.
The Lucky Duck (not to be confused with The Wild Duck featured in a recent post)… how many duck themed pubs are there in Dublin?!
The side of Devitt’s Pub, I’m not sure as to the word obscured underneath the plants…?
This place looks quirky, and look at the size of that Hendrick’s Gin bottle in the window…
A feel for the neighborhood’s old brick buildings and storefronts, with cranes looming overhead; the place on the corner decorated with rainbow pride flags is a Spanish tapas restaurant and club
A rather pessimistic book store
Your one-stop shop for caskets, household items toys, hardware, toiletries, and fancy goods
I have no idea what business operates in this space but I love the space invader video game art
The Grand Canal
Horse and buggies are not an uncommon site in Dublin, at least in the touristy areas
Bubble Tea… can you get any more hipster than that?

Map

A repurposed map from an old post, back when I had applied for a job at Concern Worldwide (which is why it’s marked on the map)

Until next time….
