A lovely Earth Day in Dublin

It’s been an uneventful past couple of days, so I’ve skipped daily posts. I’m continuing to focus more time on studying for my first CMA exam that’s just three weeks away, and today I finished the next-to-last section on the topic of internal controls — I passed the test exam questions on my first try.

Today I also had a brief 30-min interview with Climate2025.org over Zoom. The organization is just a year old, is based in the UK, and only has a handful of staff. It’s a hybrid organisation consisting of two legal entities: a social enterprise (technically a private company limited by guarantee without share capital) and a charitable organisation (still pending approval). Their mission is to support clients who are “emerging movements working for urgent systemic change in any environmental sector” by offering consulting, fiscal “hosting” (i.e., sponsorship), and other services. As far as I can tell, the job would involve doing the accounting/bookkeeping work for clients’ fiscally hosted/sponsored funding, including overseeing disbursements, issuing payments, and some budgeting. They seem to be in a rush to hire someone, and it’s not clear if there are additional interview steps in the recruitment process or not. My impression is that it would probably be a chaotic and unstructured place to work, at least for the foreseeable future, so I’m not super enthusiastic about it. We’ll see if I hear anything back from them.

Later in the day, I hear back about another job application that I had submitted over the last month — a Senior Administrator position at University College Dublin (UCD). I have been invited for a first round interview! The email notification was a form letter produced from their recruitment system, with instructions on how to log into their website and select an interview time. There were four available interview slots, all on May 4, so perhaps that means there are just four candidates? At any rate, it’s encouraging that I’m at least getting some responses to the job applications I’ve submitted.

The topic of discussion on one of RTÉ public radio’s afternoon talk shows today was a new provision by the Department of Education that would allow schools to choose whether toilet facilities for new construction and refurbishment projects will be gender neutral. Suffice it to say that the people who called into the programme had some strong opinions. The host even had to disconnect one person from the line who started accusing another participant of being homophobic! Irish society seems to have higher standards of decency and politeness in public discourse, at least on official channels.

It’s a beautiful Earth Day here in Dublin, with a cloudless blue sky and relatively warm temperatures in the mid 50s F / mid 10s C.  I get out for a walk in the late afternoon / early evening… the days are getting longer and longer, which makes it easy to lose track of time.
