Another stressful work week behind me

There hasn’t been much of interest to write about over the past few days. The weather has continued to be warm and humid, highs around 70 F / 20 C. I’ve been fighting off a sore throat, and consequently, I have forgone some walks in the evenings to rest instead.

Work continues to be unrelenting. I’ve managed to cross a few things off my list this week, but mostly I’ve been triaging multiple crises. Having strong relationships with others in the university bureaucracy seems even more important in Ireland than in the U.S. There have been a few people in other departments who have reached out to welcome me, so that’s been reassuring. Still, it’s been challenging to connect with people when working remotely.

I am supposed to meet up with my landlord this weekend to pay for two months rent in cash (as per our prior arrangement), however the banks are still operating on reduced COVID hours, i.e., closing at 4 PM on Fridays and not open at all on Saturdays. I just found out about that today, and I didn’t get a chance to go to the bank earlier in the week, so I guess we’ll have to reschedule. On one hand, I’d like to get this loose end tied up, but on the other hand I’m glad to have more free time over the weekend. At this point, I don’t have much planned, other than seeing a movie with my friend CJ on Sunday — Marvel’s new Chang-Li superhero movie, set in San Francisco, which should induce some nostalgia. Tomorrow my weekly SuperValu grocery delivery is scheduled in the morning, and in afternoon I may meet up with another newish friend I haven’t seen in awhile.
