Errands on Grafton Street, defrosting the freezer

This week has probably been the most stressful yet at work. My one staff person was out on leave again, so it was just me holding down the fort. I’ve been borrowing staff from a couple of other teams to help get some of the day-to-day transactional work done, but it feel like the mountainous backlog of overdue tasks that has built up over months (much of it before I even started) is resting fully on my shoulders.

This morning I finished up one report that had to get done in short notice for political reasons, then I took a break to run some errands. I needed to get cash out from my bank to pay rent for November and December. Plus, I needed to pick up another month’s worth of prescription medicine from Boots pharmacy. It was a mild day out with highs in the mid to upper 50s F / lower 10s C, and a mostly deep blue sky overhead. There was a long line at the bank, but I wasn’t in any rush to get back to work. Grafton Street is fully decked out in Christmas decorations now. Advertisements for Black Friday have been playing nonstop on the radio. Meanwhile, the specter of the recent surge in COVID cases and the possibility of another lockdown looms heavily in the air.

The IKEA freezer in my apartment has been frosty ever since the day I moved into Sprangers Yard. Every so often I chip away at some of the ice so that the drawers slide all the way in and the door closes tight. Tonight, I decided to go all the way and completely defrost it, motivated in large part because it wasn’t very full, which presented a good opportunity. Another exciting Friday night for me! Maybe if I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll even do some laundry.

So much better! Although I just noticed there is some ice/frost in the bottom drawer that needs to be dumped out… argh!

Until next time….
