Job offer, parade of storms, dining out, driving learner’s permit

It’s almost been a week since my last post… one of the longest intervals since starting the blog. The big news is that my interview with Mazars last Thursday so well that I received a job offer on Friday! I still haven’t signed the contract, but I have told my current employer that I am planning to accept the offer. As of now, I am expecting to start early April. Meanwhile, I returned to work on Monday and have been working through the backlog of emails as best I can.

Ireland has been hit with multiple storms over the past week. First it was Storm Eunice last Friday, then Storm Franklin on Sunday, and then today it was Storm Dudley. The storms have brought a mix of rain, gail force winds, hail, and even some snow.

Other highlights of the past week:

On Saturday, I met up some new friends at an Ethiopian restaurant called Gursha. I had been to Ethiopian restaurants before in San Francisco and Berkeley, and the food was comparable. As I’ve said before, for its size Dublin has an impressive variety of ethnic food restaurants.

I haven’t been great about getting out for walks, mostly because of the weather, but when there have been breaks I’ve gone out on a few evenings after week. Some photos from O’Connell Street:

My Irish driver’s learning permit arrived in the mail today! I am now able to legally drive Class B vehicles (up to 8 passengers) accompanied by a qualified drivers or tractors (apparently on my own?). I still have to wait 6 months before I can apply for a full driver’s license, and in the interim, I have to complete 6 driving lessons. I still need to research my options for the driving lessons, as there are multiple providers and I’m not sure exactly how it works… do they provide the car? Also, if I want to be licensed to drive manual stick-shift cars, I’ll have to take lessons and eventually a driving test behind the wheel of an actual manual stick-shift car (if you use an car with an automatic transmission for your lessons and test, you’ll won’t be licensed to drive manual stick-shifts). It seems much more regulated than in the U.S.

Tonight, my friend CJ and I had dinner at Fallon & Byrne, and upcoming speciality food shop not far from me. He had a voucher for €25 off the bill, which meant we could indulge in a decent bottle of wine and some tasty pasta dishes for only €20 out of pocket each.

Until next time….

  • Congrats on the job thingy! The pictures on the back of your drivers license make me want to vicariously ‘collect them all’ along with you. Start with the low hanging fruit of a scooter and work your way up from there, mkay?
