Phoenix Park, O’Connell Street, Michael Collins, and Krispy Kreme

The past two weeks have been relatively uneventful. Work continues to be very slow.

The warmest summer weather is behind us now, but temperatures have still been in high 60s F / low 70 F, around 20 C.

On Sunday I took a long walk with a friend out to Phoenix Park, which I hadn’t visited in many months. The open skies were a refreshing break from Dublin’s urbanity. I also captured some glowing views of O’Connell Street at dusk.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Michael Collins, an Irish revolutionary who was targeted by the anti-treaty faction during Ireland’s independence from British rule. There was a large gathering at the small memorial site in Béal na Bláth in County Cork where the ambush had been taken place. Both the Taoiseach (prime minister) and Tánaiste (deputy prime minister) gave speeches on behalf of their respective two leading political parties that had emerged from the Irish civil war, Fianna Fáil (anti-treaty) and Fine Gael (pro-treaty). Sinn Fein was not represented.

In other news, a Krispy Kreme location has opened in the old Central Bank building (the next street over from Sprangers Yard) that has been under renovation for years. There have been other Krispy Kreme franchise locations in Ireland for many years now, and one in the Dublin suburbs is said to be the most profitable one in the world.

Until next time….
