Outing to Millstown, long walk back, and mandatory hotel quarantines

It’s a beautiful mostly sunny day, but still chilly in lower 50s / high single digits C. In the afternoon I meet up with my friend CJ, whom I haven’t seen in awhile. We take the Luas light rail down to Milltown, a suburb on the southern end of Dublin, named for its location on the River Dodder. There is a riverside walking paths and a small park on one end with a shipping container cafe and the Dropping Well Pub located conveniently nearby. There are lots of people out enjoying the weather, coffee, and pints to go.

We decide to walk all the way back through Ranelagh village, over the Grand Canal, and into the city centre. I got home by the time the sun setting around 6:00pm, having clocked in almost 11,000 steps from walking just one-way. It’s the furtherst

In COVID news, Irish President Michael D Higgins signed into law new legislation to enforce mandatory hotel quarantines for passengers entering Ireland from high-risk countries (mostly in Africa and South America). However, the law won’t go into effect until later this month as the government is still working out the details, such as private security to enforce the quarantines, arrangements for physical exercise and food delivery to rooms, and the frequency of testing for hotel staff. The  gardaí will not be on site or have a role in escorting passengers to their hotels, and instead will only be called upon in cases of non- compliance. The new law also increases penalties for non-essential travel from €500 to €2,000. Penalties for breaches of mandatory hotel quarantining include fines of up to €4,000 and/or a one-month prison sentence for a first offence. Good thing I don’t have any travel plans soon!

Until next time….
