This-and-thats… jobs apps, boozeless wine, crab cakes, and doom-scrolling

Has another week passed?! They are beginning to blend together… at least the changing weather here in Ireland helps mark the passage of time. It’s another day of blue and partly-cloudy skies in Dublin, but chillier. There were a few food items I couldn’t order in this morning’s weekly SuperValu grocery delivery. This motivates me to get out in the afternoon for a walk over to the Fresh grocery shop in Smithfield. The Liffey is calm and almost mirror-like.

When reviewing daily job alerts in my email, I notice there are a couple of “grant compliance manager” positions posted through recruiters — although the actual organisations aren’t named, it sounds like they are governmental/public institutions. While the roles are more focused on policy than finance, the responsibilities sound similar to those I had at UC Berkeley managing student fee funds. It can’t hurt to apply right? I decide to take a “more is less” strategy and whittle my CV/resume down to a single page by highlighting only my relevant grants/policy experience. Until I obtain my CMA, there doesn’t seem to be much point in applying for jobs that require an accountancy qualification.

A few other random tidbits…

My elderly neighbour Irene randomly left some Toblerone chocolates at the door of my apartment a few days ago — I was planning on making a batch of really good homemade scones using a more involved recipe than before, and if they turn out well, I’ll give a couple of them to her in return.

I had ordered some tempranillo red wine from SuperValu, but only after it was delivered did I notice the label says “low alcohol.” The fine print on the back further clarifies that is it a “dealcoholised wine based drink.” No wonder it was on sale!

For dinner, I finally make some crab cakes after postponing it for a couple of weeks… it’s actually not a difficult recipe, the secret ingredient is Ritz Crackers (which surprisingly I was able to find). The crab meat wasn’t quite the same as I’ve used before, still fresh / not canned, but smaller pieces and more pinkish. The crab cakes still come out pretty good. I have some premade cole slaw on the side.

If anyone is looking for somewhere to doom-scroll about new coronavirus variants, I recommend NextStrain.org. The data visualizations are as impressive as they are dizzying. The growth of the UK aka B.1.1.7 aka 20I/501Y.V1 variant is shown in the orange/reddish colour. Let’s hope the spread can be suppressed before any vaccine-resistant mutations take hold!

Until next time….
